Encompassing the state of Madhya Pradesh and parts of Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan, Central India has been at the crossroads of cultural currents and military campaigns through history. The rugged land is littered with myriad forts and monuments, and vast tracts of wildernesses that hold close to 35 wildlife reserves of varying habitats.
The Chambal river originates in the Vindhya Hills of Central India, and flows northeast to join up with the Yamuna, which in turn is a main tributary of the Ganga. It is a clean, scenic river, meandering through a relatively sparsely populated region.
We travel up a section of the Chambal basin that straddles the borders of the states of Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh. In the process, we visit three different types of wildlife reserves, travel on road, dirt tracks and river through rural country, visit old forts, quaint and remote towns and villages. Accommodation varies widely. Contact us for more information
This tour has two focal points, from where we make forays to ancient sites, as well as natural environments.
The first is Chanderi, a small, quaint town known for traditional crafts like weaving, metalwork and pottery, located in a cradle of medieval monuments. The second is Bhopal, the capital of Madhya Pradesh, within a few hours drive of which are a bunch of interesting places. Contact us for more information
On this tour we visit and stay in small towns and villages which have old forts, temples, palaces, and rock-cut caves with 1500-year-old Buddhist art.
We visit two nature reserves nestled in the rugged Vindhya hills. One is tiny, the other is much bigger; both are haunts of a highly endangered bird species. The deserted, romantic town of Mandu, perched on a hilltop, with its gay palaces, pavilions and lakes is a central destination of the itinerary. Contact us for more information
Twenty-four thousand verses long, the Ramayana is one of India's two big epics. Its first versions were known to be in existence by at least 200 BCE. The story revolves around the life and adventures of the legendary god-king Rama, and features many other characters. The Ramayana is deeply ingrained in Hindu culture.
This tour is set in a corner of North India, where the two states of Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh meet. It begins at Chitrakoot, a small town on the banks of the Mandakini river, where many of the Ramayana's legendary sites lie. From here it carries on through picturesque back-country terrain to forts, forests and streams. Contact us for more information
